Did anybody else find Catcher in the Rye Self Indulgent?

That's exactly why I didn't like it. I thought, what right does this man Salinger have to express his opinion. Is that so bad? You have to admit we live in a world where individuality is crushed under the weight of reality. I mean we have been spiritually destroyed by the likes of society, physics and the limits of possibility, and our opinions never matter, which almost makes me believe anyone whose opinion did matter never had any say in the matter. So why should Salinger who can write spunky and simplistic prose get his foot in the door while we're all shut out viewing it through a window? Why should we care about him. Has he had it any worse than the rest of us? I mean there are many other people out there that have their own little ideas and allegories and musical scores for their lives but they wont be realized and these poor folks will have nothing but their thoughts. If you have any conflicts you face alone, a certain outlook on things, I would like to hear about it. I for one feel I was born on the wrong side of the river at the wrong time quoting another 'angsty' text rumblefish. I mean I couldn't relate to Salinger's book, I don't think kids are so superior and pure, they just haven't realized how ruthless they can be, but there is nothing that can stop them from progressing in to those stages not even a Catcher in the Rye. A child is just a milder form of an adult and I hate to say it but I have often become disgusted seeing babies where I go. It's not that I hate humanity (albeit at one time I thought I did) but babies can become anything, psychopathic killers, stockbrokers. I never know exactly who I'm dealing with in the company of children. That's about the only way I can explain that feeling I get. In fact anybody I don't know, I'm already afraid of. I never know whose incursion I'm going to fall victim to. I'm just glad I figured out why I was disgusted by Catcher in the Rye as much as I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I certainly hope I don't look back on this with regret thinking that it doesn't accurately describe me. please share your own personal ideas about life and society etc... etc...
